The outward first five holes are through the pine tree forest. Water and good hole layouts provides the hazards that play a big part in players having to select the right club and hit with care. The eighteenth is a tricky Par-4 mainly involving a lake that is just waiting for the inaccurate shot.

A pleasant surprise…

After reading a few reviews prior to playing, I was concerned that San Lorenzo Golf Course might not be “up to snuff”. However, I was pleasantly surprised as the routing and the holes were very interesting. No gimicky holes; what you see is what you get. Conditions were above average and the greens were very good; always a big plus for me when the greens roll well and true. Despite the lack of a clubhouse - due to a fire a couple of years ago, I learned at check-in - I would recommend this course to anyone visiting the Golden Triangle of the Algarve.

Course is picturesque with holes overlooking the bay and running along the boardwalk. It was very enjoyable to play except for Hole 18 which is overly punitive. The cart paths are in bad shape. The greens are in reasonable shape. With no clubhouse, the small area where you check-in and get loaded onto carts became very congested. Restrooms are good quality portable toilets and there is a temporary structure for food service. Giving us a box lunch was a nice touch.

Obvious disadvantage is lack of clubhouse and course looks a little scruffy around the edges hence only 4 stars. However, the views and course layout are excellent and the greens were well maintained. Thought it a nice touch they included a packed lunch for everyone in our party at no extra cost.
