We played five courses in the west Algarve recently and this was our favourite. I played it three years ago without a buggy and that is not a good idea. This course is very hilly with lots of raised tees. Its the usual Algarve excellent condition. Golf snobs dismiss it as mickey mouse because of the extreme slopes but as mid handicappers we think its very exciting with superb views and scenery. Its well worth the extra drive west.

Alamos was a welcome change from some of the other Algarve courses which can feel rather enclosed by villas and development. Not a villa in sight here, its beautiful open country all around with plenty of wildlife. I spotted flocks of flamingos and storks and even bee-eaters here. Oh and I was there to play golf too! Its excellent condition and the greens are particularly good, all interesting shapes and slopes. Arriving there is the biggest challenge! Alamos isnt signposted - aim for Morgardo because they share the same clubhouse (we didnt know). On entering the estate you go through a security gate and think youre there. But there is 4.5km over cobbled road, past half built and derelict hotels to negotiate first. The clubhouse was almost empty, all very strange. But Its a very nice course overall, good value and well be going back next time.

We liked this course. The front nine is fairly short and typical Algarve but the longer back nine opens up to some excellent holes with at least a couple of very daunting tee shots over water. Has a very good practice area with separate chipping, putting and bunker greens. Shame the range is too short to allow woods. Otherwise very enjoyable.
